Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) in Naples & Marco Island

A proven, minimally invasive way to quiet the nerves carrying your pain — with relief that can last months to years.

For the right patient, radiofrequency ablation is one of the most effective interventional treatments available for arthritis-related back, neck, and joint pain. Rather than masking pain with medication, RFA uses precise, image-guided heat to calm the small sensory nerves that carry pain signals from a worn or arthritic joint — so the joint can keep moving while the pain quiets down. At Timeless Interventional of Naples, Dr. Ranasinghe performs every RFA herself, under live imaging.

OVERVIEW

What radiofrequency ablation actually does.

Every painful joint is served by tiny sensory nerves whose only job is to carry pain signals to your brain. Radiofrequency ablation uses a specialized needle to deliver controlled heat to those specific nerves, interrupting the signal at its source.

The joint itself isn't removed or fused — only the pain-carrying nerve fibers are quieted. Because those small nerves gradually regrow over time, the pain relief isn't always permanent, but it commonly lasts many months to a couple of years, and the procedure can be safely repeated when the pain returns.

WHAT IT TREATS

The pain RFA is best for.

RFA works especially well for pain coming from arthritic joints of the spine and the knee:

Not sure which is causing your pain? That's exactly what the diagnostic step below is designed to answer.

HOW IT WORKS

A two-step process — so we only treat the nerves that are actually the problem.

RFA is deliberately a two-visit process, and that's a good thing: it means we confirm the source of your pain before we treat it.

Step 1 — Diagnostic nerve block. First, we numb the suspected nerves with a small, image-guided injection of local anesthetic. If your pain drops significantly for the expected hours afterward, we've confirmed those nerves are the source — and you're an excellent candidate for RFA.

Step 2 — Radiofrequency ablation. At the second visit, we return to those same confirmed nerves and apply controlled radiofrequency heat to quiet them for the long term. The whole procedure is done through a needle, with no incision, usually in well under an hour.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The day of your procedure — and after.

RFA is an in-office, outpatient procedure. You're awake but comfortable; the area is numbed with local anesthetic. Using fluoroscopy (live X-ray) or ultrasound, Dr. Ranasinghe guides the needle to the exact target — accuracy that makes the treatment both safer and more effective. Most patients drive themselves home and return to normal activity within a day or two, sometimes with mild, temporary soreness at the site.

Relief often builds over one to three weeks as the treated nerves settle, rather than appearing instantly. When it takes hold, many patients describe it as the first real break from their pain in years — and a genuine alternative to living on medication or rushing toward surgery.

THE DIFFERENCE

Unhurried, direct-pay care — on your timeline.

Because we're a direct-pay practice, there's no prior-authorization wait between your diagnostic block and your ablation, and no insurer deciding how many levels we can treat. When it's clinically appropriate, we can address several joints in one plan and move at the pace your recovery calls for. You see Dr. Ranasinghe directly at every visit — the physician performing your procedure is the one who evaluated you.

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions

HOW LONG DOES RADIOFREQUENCY LAST?

Relief from RFA commonly lasts many months to a couple of years. Because the treated nerves slowly regenerate over time, pain can gradually return — but the procedure can be safely repeated when it does, making it a durable, long-term option for the right patient.

DOES RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION HURT?

The procedure is done with local anesthetic, so most patients feel pressure more than pain during it. Afterward you may have mild, temporary soreness at the site for a few days, which typically settles quickly — most people return to normal activity within a day or two.

HOW SOON WILL RFA START WORKING?

Relief usually builds over one to three weeks as the treated nerves quiet down, rather than appearing instantly. Some patients notice improvement sooner. If a diagnostic block confirmed the right nerves beforehand, the odds of meaningful, lasting relief are high.

IS RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION SAFE?

RFA is a well-established, minimally invasive treatment performed under live image guidance for precision and safety. Serious complications are uncommon; the most typical after-effect is short-lived soreness. Dr. Ranasinghe reviews your history and imaging to confirm you're a good candidate before proceeding.
